Some advice from the Hare Razor

The purpose of this forum is to share ideas on what makes a good run.

I'm going to kick it off by putting in the advice, below, which I send to first-times hares.

Feel free to add ideas or comment on the advice I've given. If you wish copy the list, add and amend it, then post it as a new entry.

Here we go, advice to newbie hares from the Hare Razor:

- you'll probably need four bags of plain, white flour (I'm assuming it won't snow, but use food coloring with the flour if you think it might)

- whether you run or walk the trail should last about an hour

- allow two to three hours to lay the trail. Some people also run it on their own to check the flour is visible and it all makes sense. Not everyone does that.

- don't bother looking out of the window beforehand to see what the weather's like as we're all-weather hasher's, so it makes no difference.

- be mindful where we're running e.g. near roads, tram lines etc. Normally not a problem - we've even crossed in-service railways - but just be mindful anyway.

- use your judgment getting the distance right on the blobs. You probably already have a feel for the right spacing between blobs.

- your check marks are an opportunity for the fast runners to slow down (by checking) whilst the slower runners and walkers catch up. The mark of a good run is when the whole pack keeps together and finishes at the same time. Difficult but possible

- don't forget checks and few false trails. These should end with an X.

- do put in little jokes, eg fake river crossings, stupidly short false trails etc, if you wish

- you can also have "boob" checks where only girls are allowed to check the trails

- or "dick" checks

- drink stops (not obligatory) are marked with a DS. Hares are responsible (practically and financially) for any drink stop

- oh, and there can be a song check if you really want one

- the last bit of the trail is marked, before the end, with an "ON IN"

- think consider where the circle will be held. The Biermeister, of whom we are not worthy, will need to know where to put the drink car. Obviously we don't want the circle too far from the car.

- but then again we don't want the circle too near houses or the inhabitants will call the police (they really will).

- you need to select an "on-after" where we go to eat and drink some more ... you know the score. On average we get 17 hasher's per run with a standard deviation of 5. You also need the restaurant's phone number so you can advise them if numbers are drastically different or we're going to be later than planned. (Note, we will be later than planned)

- get the details out on the MH3 mailing group (by sending an email to munichh3@yahoogroups.com), Posting the info to various websites (Toytown, Facebook and on the www.munich-h3.com web-site) at the latest the Tuesday before the run. Some of us veterans have more rights to do this if you guys don't

- have fun, that's the most important bit.

KISS

Oh and, in the name of God, keep it simple.
As Mies van der Rohe said, "less is more". I'm not sure he was referring to trail laying but it is pertinent advice.
